A Potted History
Gorseinon Cricket Club
shares its home location with Gorseinon Rugby Club and is situated at the Welfare Ground just off Lime Street in Gorseinon
town centre, near Swansea. It was founded in approximately between 1893 and 1903 and has recently celebrated its centenary
year in 2003. The ground was given to the cricket and rugby clubs by the then British Steel Corporation for use of sporting
facilities only. It was bought from BSC for a nominal sum in the 1960's by a social section made up of members from both
sports clubs which was formed to organise a social club and running costs.
The Cricket Club has in the past paid
professional players, most notably in the 1970's such as Albert Wright and a cricketer who would eventually go on to play
for England by the name of Chris Smith ( who's brother Robin would also play for England ).
For many years the club
had found it increasingly difficult to be able to afford to pay players and has stopped paying players since the late 1990's.
The club has since found it difficult to attract players to the club, which may account for our position in the third division
of the South Wales Cricket Association League, something were always striving to address.
It is thanks to the generosity
of sponsors, donators and playing & non-playing members that were able to keep going season after season. The club has
won many trophies in its lifetime, but over the last twenty years, it has struggled both financially and on the cricket
field. The club currently boasts first, second, third, youth and junior teams that compete in the South Wales Cricket Association
League, Cup and its affiliations, and the future aims of the club is the ongoing development of the ground and playing
facilities, and the development of our junior teams and the aspirations of the senior teams
